Along with 3D movies, 3D animated games have also garnered
fame and popularity amongst people. When 3D graphics came on the scene, the
masses demanded gaming companies to quit producing 2D animated games and shift
to creating 3D games. Since then, the popularity of 3D games seems
never-ending. Why the sudden surge in popularity, you ask? Let’s find out by
looking at the main reason:
People Want Realism
Have you seen the movie Wreck-it Ralph? In the movie, the
character Felix is a 2D character that falls in love with the high-definition
beauty, Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun, from Hero’s Duty. Unlike him, she is
created using 3D animation properties. These days, it is games like Hero’s
Duty, which seem to amaze people.
When they see a character in front of them, they want it to
look as real as possible. Hence, the gaming industry readily hires 3D animation
companies to create a masterpiece and bring their vision to life. To give the
viewer a sense of realism, the gaming industry uses to three ways to represent
that, Fixed 3D, first person perspective, and third person perspective.
What is Fixed 3D?
Fixed 3D is a three-dimensional depiction of a game where the
animators render its characters in real time against a static backdrop. One of
the biggest advantages this technique provides animators is that they are able
to add realistic details and markings to the character using minimal hardware.
The only downside to this technique is that the player’s
inability to view the character’s movements from multiple perspectives. Some
games that have used this technique in the past include, Final Fantasy,
Parasite Eve I and II, and Little Big Adventure.
What is First Person Perspective?
Just like its name suggests, first person perspective is
from your point of view. If your character is shooting, you will only see what
they see. The same goes for when they are driving a vehicle. The genre that has
adopted this technique the most is shooting games.
In shooting games, you can see the gun and the enemy that
stands before you. The game makers will not have to go through the long process
of detailing the character’s appearance, as they would have to in third-person.
As for the advantage it provides players, they are able to
shoot clearly without the character’s body getting in the way. The disadvantage
in the first person perspective is the player’s inability to time the shots and
estimate the distance required to cross platforms.
What is Third Person Perspective?
In third person perspective, the player will be able to see
their character along with all the viewpoints. Game makers usually use this
technique when producing action and adventure games. However, again, even
playing in third person perspective poses some problems for the player such as the
camera moving when the player stands with their back next to the wall.
Regardless of the disadvantages that come with each
technique, different genres have adopted them as their go-to technique for
giving people an amazing 3D experience each time they play.
